The soft and comfortable cotton T-shirt you are wearing actually had a "previous life" that was a fluffy ball of cotton fibers? Today, we are going to uncover the "past and present" of this thin yarn - let's see how it traveled from the fields to your closet.
Step 1: Cotton is actually the "hair of a fruit"
Don't laugh, this is true! Cotton is not a "flower", but the seed hairs of the cotton plant. Every spring, farmers plant cotton seeds in the fields. After several months of nourishment from sunlight and rain, in autumn, the cotton bolls will split open, revealing a bunch of snow-white fibers - these are what we call "seed cotton".
These fibers are actually the "hairs" of the cotton seeds. Each one is approximately 2-4 centimeters long. Their original function was to help the seeds spread and reproduce, but unexpectedly, they were "stolen" by humans and turned into a precious material for weaving and making clothes.
Step 2: Harvesting cotton, it's not as simple as you think
You might think that harvesting cotton is just picking it one by one? Wrong! There are two ways of modern cotton harvesting:
Mechanical harvesting: Large cotton harvesters are like "giant hedgehogs" driving through the cotton fields. The high-speed rotating thimbles will "roll" the cotton down. One machine can harvest hundreds of acres in a day, with astonishing efficiency.
Manual harvesting: In some carefully cultivated areas, workers carry bags on their backs and pick the cotton.Although it's slow, it ensures that the cotton is clean and free of impurities.
No matter which method is used, what is picked is "seed cotton" with black seeds, and it cannot be used directly.
Step 3: Compressing cotton - "Taking off the clothes" of the cotton
After the cotton is sent to the cotton mill, the first thing to do is to separate the cotton fibers from the cotton seeds. This process is called "cotton pressing".
The modern serrated cotton presser is like a super "comb". Through the high-speed rotation of the serrated blades, the fibers are "scraped" off the seeds. The separated cotton fibers are called "skin cotton", and the remaining cotton seeds can be used to extract oil, with no waste at all!
Did you know? A large cotton mill can process tens of tons of seed cotton in a day, producing approximately 10 tons of skin cotton. That means the 200-gram T-shirt on your body only requires less than half a kilogram of skin cotton to be made.
Step 4: Cleaning and carding - "Taking a bath and combing hair" for the cotton
The freshly pressed skin cotton still has many impurities: broken leaves, dust, short fibers... At this time, the "cleaning" process is needed. The machine is like a huge vacuum cleaner + sieve, blowing away and screening out the impurities.
Next is "carding", this step is particularly interesting. The carding machine has thousands of fine steel needles, which are like your mother combing your hair, straightening and smoothing the tangled cotton fibers, while removing the remaining impurities and short fibers. Finally, a thin as a cicada's wing "cotton net" is formed, and then it gathers into a fluffy and soft "cotton strand".
Step 5: Plying and spinning - "Twisting the cotton into a rope"
A single cotton strand is too fragile. It needs to be combined with 6-8 strands of cotton strands and stretched and combined to call "plying". The purpose is to make the fiber arrangement more uniform and parallel.
Then it enters the "spinning" stage: The cotton strands are gradually pulled thinner and added a little twist to become like thick wool yarn. At this time, the yarn is still loose and can be broken by pulling, but it has already taken on the shape of "yarn".
Step 6: Twisting - The True "Magical Moment"
The coarse yarn enters the twisting machine, and this is the most magical step. The twisting machine rotates at tens of thousands of revolutions per minute, rapidly stretching and thinning the coarse yarn, while adding sufficient twist to make the fibers tightly bound together, turning it into a truly sturdy yarn.
You can imagine: The originally finger-thick cotton strand becomes a much thinner yarn than a hair strand after passing through the twisting machine, and it is strong enough to be used for weaving! The stretching factor is usually dozens or even hundreds of times.
Step 7: Spooling and Packaging - The "Graduation Ceremony" of Yarn
The spun fine yarn then undergoes the "spooling" process: It is wound into standard-sized tube yarn, and any flaws or joints are checked. Qualified yarn is bundled and labeled, and sent to the weaving factory or clothing factory.
At this point, a cotton fiber has finally completed its magnificent transformation from "field fuzz" to "industrial raw material".

Different yarns have different "characters": The higher the count, the thinner the yarn; the greater the twist, the harder and straighter the yarn. Some yarns are suitable for making soft underwear, some for making stiff shirts, and some are specifically used for making durable jeans.
